For many clients, interactions with health and wellbeing services are shaped not only by their immediate care needs but also by past experiences of stigma, discrimination, or exclusion. Developing inclusive practice is therefore essential to creating environments where LGBTQ+ people feel respected, understood, and safe to access the support they need.

This comprehensive full‑day training deepens your understanding of LGBTQ+ identities, experiences, and health priorities, while equipping you with practical strategies to embed inclusive practice into your everyday work. Developed by LGBTQ+ community members and subject matter experts, the session combines foundational knowledge with applied learning, including case studies, reflective activities, and real‑world scenarios. You’ll explore terminology, lived experiences, historical and legislative context, health disparities, barriers to care, and the practical steps organisations and practitioners can take to create affirming services.

Designed for health and wellbeing professionals, this training supports you to confidently engage with LGBTQ+ clients, recognise the impact of discrimination on health outcomes, and adapt your practice to meet the unique needs of diverse communities.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:

• Define LGBTQ+ and differentiate between gender, sexuality, and related concepts.
• Describe diverse experiences within LGBTQ+ communities, including common experiences of trans and gender diverse people.
• Outline key historical influences and explain how discrimination has shaped contemporary LGBTQ+ experiences and access to care.
• Describe current physical, mental, and social health priorities and challenges affecting LGBTQ+ communities.
• Explain how discrimination, stigma, and exclusion impact health outcomes and help‑seeking behaviours.
• Discuss the unique challenges LGBTQ+ people may face in health and wellbeing settings and how these influence service engagement.
• Implement practical LGBTQ+‑affirming strategies using inclusive language, appropriate terminology, and respectful communication.
• Apply principles of person‑centred, culturally safe, and trauma‑informed care to support LGBTQ+ clients.
• Identify opportunities to adapt services, environments, and organisational practices to increase accessibility and inclusion.
• Demonstrate confidence in everyday allyship, including how to respond to challenges and advocate for safer, more affirming care environments.

This course is delivered through a blended format, with 1 hour of eLearning and 6 hours of facilitated webinar learning. This training is also eligible for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points.
