In the face of authoritarian, divisive trends and multiplying crises, when politics-as-usual is stymied, Awakening Democracy through Public Work shows it is possible to build foundations for a democratic awakening grounded in deep American traditions of a citizen-centered commonwealth. Awakening Democracy through Public Work begins with the story of Public Achievement, a youth civic education and empowerment initiative with roots in the civil rights movement. It describes Public Achievement's first home in St. Bernard's, a low-income Catholic elementary school in St. Paul, Minnesota, and how the program spread across the country and then abroad, giving birth to the larger concept of public work. In Public Achievement, young people practice citizen politics as they tackle issues ranging from bullying, racism, and sexual harassment to playground improvements, curriculum changes, and better school lunches. They develop everyday political skills for working across differences and making constructive change. Such citizen politics, more like jazz than a set piece of music, involves the interplay and negotiation of diverse interests and views, sometimes contentious, sometimes harmonious. Public Achievement highlights young people's roles as co-creators--builders of schools, communities, and democratic society. They are not citizens in waiting, but active citizens who do public work. Awakening Democracy through Public Work also describes how public work can find expression in many kinds of work, from education and health to business and government. It is relevant across the sweep of society. People have experimented with the idea of public work in hundreds of settings in thirty countries, from Northern Ireland and Poland to Ghana and Japan. In Burundi it birthed a national initiative to rework relations between villagers and police. In South Africa it helped people in poor communities to see themselves as problem solvers rather than simply consumers of government services. In the US, at Denison University, public work is being integrated into dorm life. At Maxfield School in St. Paul, it is transforming special education. In rural Missouri, it led to the emPowerU initiative of the Heartland Foundation, encouraging thousands of young people to stay in the region. In Eau Claire, Wisconsin, it generated Clear Vision, a program providing government support for citizen-led community improvements. Public work has expanded into the idea of citizen professionals working with other citizens, not on them or for them. It has also generated the idea of civic science, in which scientists see themselves as citizens and science as a resource for civic empowerment. Awakening Democracy through Public Work shows that we can free the productive powers of people to work across lines and differences to build a better society and create grounded hope for the future.Binding Type: Paperback

Hilarious and Heartfelt
Format: Hardcover
I started reading this to see if my cousins (who are between 7 and 11) would like it-- and I ended up loving it. It's a fun, mysterious, animal-friendly book. It not only keeps the reader on edge as an exciting whodunnit but also touches on deep questions of animal welfare and consumerism. The characters, both the children and the adults are touchingly real, filled with flaws and always given the chance to redeem themselves. Although it takes place in an imaginary zoo and much of the book is comedy, everything that happens feels so authentic.
I'd recommend it to both kids and adults-- everyone will get something different out of it.

This book kept me guessing and housing until the end, it deserves five stars!
Format: Kindle
I started to read this book because my friend was reading it on the way to swim practice and I wondered what kept her so intrigued and unresponsive. I asked her about it and she told me what it was about and what was currently happening. I was already rather to start it. I bought it and immediately began to read. I read for about four hours straight- stupidly- no joke!! It was one of few mystery/action-adventure novels that are actually really unpredictable in great ways! All I could think about was the story as I say in middle-school today, wondering what would happen next. I would most certainly recommend this to any reader, wether out not they like mystery or not!

Awesome Information for Kids - History, legends and fun facts
Format: Flexibound, Format: Flexibound
Packed with interesting and entertaining facts and legends for kids (and adults but def geared towards kids). My youngest could only read in small doses because it’s A LOT of info packed on the pages. They really enjoyed learning about Barcelona’s affinity for giants, dragons, and good versus evil. So many fascinating tid bits got them excited about our summer trip (we are going to Barcelona!).
Highlights: executioners would sell dead people’s shoes which the townspeople put in front of their houses to ward off evil spirits.
Gaudi didn’t use straight lines because there are none in nature. He was so obsessed with the basilica plans he stopped hygiene and wore shoes made of woven plant roots.
My kids loved the section on chocolate and candies (my vote is churros) and the tradition of the poop log 💩
Overall we really enjoy this book and it will join us on our travels. It got my kids excited to see the giant goldfish sculpture, see the sharks at the aquarium, the amusement park, fountains, statues and so many of the history rich areas of Barcelona.
Highly recommend if you’re planning a trip with kids to get them engaged, or for a report for school, or just to learn about other places and cultures.
Please note - this is not a travel guide for adults. No hotels, tours, prices etc are included.
